There was a time when I would literally gain weight if I even LOOKED at a doughnut, but today (and after years of learning my body and creating healthy eating habits), I am able to enjoy the foods I love without packing on the extra pounds. My secret? I naturally boosted my metabolism, burning more calories and maximizing fat loss. Here are some important steps you should consider to transform yourself into a “Calorie Killa:”

  1. Begin your day with fitness. I start each day with at LEAST 15 minutes of exercise. Just 15 minutes in the morning can make a huge impact on how many calories you burn throughout the day. Multiple studies have shown that people who work out in the morning, burn more calories during the day due to the metabolic boost from exercising in the AM. It can be as simple as jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, and squats at home. Morning exercise is a sure way to speed up your metabolism.
  2. Eat your carbs 2 hours before and after your workout. “What” you eat is important but “when” you eat is just as significant. Since food is energy, it is important to fuel your body according to your activity level. Be sure to consume quality carbohydrates to support your workouts and replenish afterwards. (Also, as you become stronger, challenge yourself by gradually intensifying your workouts).
  3. Get adequate REST. Researchers have found a link between metabolism and sleep, not getting enough of it can slow your metabolism and even cause you to eat more during the day.
  4. BONUS: Drink green tea! Not only is green tea a great anti-oxidant, it has been proven to boost energy and speed up metabolism.
