Sesame Street is putting our a new initiative called, “Little Children, Big Challenges” that provides children with a way to cope with having parents in jail. It includes videos, a downloadable book, activities and tips for parents and caregivers.
“What is carceration and why is your dad in it?” One of the adorably colorful characters asked. The woman in the clip explained incarceration “when someone breaks the law–an adult rule and they have to go to jail or prison.”
Personally, I think it’s awesome that a children’s show is opening up conversations that are bigger than the letter of the day and teaching kids how to tie their shoes. Actress Garcell Beauvais is also opening up heavier topics to children with her book series, “I Am…” which take topics like divorce, being mixed, etc. and explaining them for children. It’s being reported that Sesame Street’s efforts are receiving mixed reviews. While many parents praise the show for stepping outside the box of children’s shows, there’s many people who feel Sesame Street is making it “normal” to have parents in jail. It may not be “normal,” but it certainly is a reality.
I’d much rather my children learn about these hefty topics from the shows they already watch in a healthy way than to hear it from friends in school without a full and clear explanation. What do you think about Sesame Street’s life lessons for children? Let’s chat! @Rhapsodani
