Strawberry Letter 23: How Long Do I Have To Wait?

I am a 29 year old single mother. I have been dating this guy for 8 years now and we have definitely had our share of ups and downs in the relationship. There have been trust issues along with him accusing me of doing things I know I did not. We have finally come to a point in our relationship where we are getting along without arguing about silly things all the time.

The thing that bothers me the most about this relationship is that I want to get married and have another baby, but every time I bring up the subject he has a laundry list of excuses why he doesn’t want to get married; from he’s been married before to he has to get his life where he wants it before he gets married. Now this man is 40 years old, how much more preparation does his life need?

He has a good job, 3 cars, the only thing he doesn’t have is his own home, which shouldn’t be a problem because we have been living together in my home for about 5 years. I am a good woman, I have my own house, my own car, a good job, a couple of degrees; what is it that I am doing wrong in this relationship? I have thought about leaving on several occasions but I don’t want to disrupt my sons comfort zone by him not being around all the time.

I love him, but how long am I supposed to wait for him to commit to me?
