Al Sharpton spoke up against the Tea Party at a recent NAACP state convention in New Jersey, the Courier-Post reports.

The Rev. Al Sharpton told guests at the NAACP’s state convention here Saturday that civil rights are under fire and that “the basis of the Tea Party is antithetical to civil rights.”

Asked whether the Tea Party rallying cry “Take back our country” is code for “take back the country from its first black president,” Sharpton replied curtly, “Take it back from whom to whom?”

“If they (Tea Party) are advocating states’ rights,” said Sharpton, keynote speaker at the three-day convention, “that’s always been the enemy of civil rights.”
