The family of Terence Crutcher is demanding answers after a Tulsa, Oklahoma, police officer fatally shot the 40-year-old unarmed Black man as his car was stalled on the side of the road.
Outrage is building in the community and across the nation as the shocking video of the shooting spreads. Police helicopter video and dash cam video captured the disturbing events that led up to the shooting.
Prior to the shooting, an officer in the police helicopter is heard on video saying, “That looks like a bad dude too … to be on something.”
Crutcher said of her brother’s murder, “Every time I hear the helicopter, the police, and the news footage, I just get so emotional.”
“My brother was a loveable guy,” Crutcher said. The slain 40-year-old was a father of four who had just returned to college to study music appreciation the same day he was gunned down by Tulsa cops. Tiffany shared her brother’s wishes to make his family proud and said, “he wanted to become better and he was working on his self.”
Crutcher later said, “I wished this was simply a dream.”
Benjamin Crump, Crutcher’s family attorney who is well-known for his involvement in the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown cases, said that as a result of his car stalling on the road, Crutcher “was in distress.”
“He was broke down just like the case of Jonathan Ferrell in Charlotte, who had the accident. He got shot by the police. And Corey Jones was broke down on the side of the road in Palm Beach … he needed help and he got shot.”
Crump continued, “Now we’re here in Tulsa, Oklahoma where once again, Terence Crutcher is broke down; he needed help, instead he got a bullet in his lung and this is by the people who are supposed to protect and serve him.”
Before concluding his remarks on NewsOne Now, Attorney Crump said, “It’s an epidemic in America when Black people, especially Black men and Black women, have accidents and instead of getting help, we get treated like criminals; we get treated like suspects and this is the crux of the matter, this is the problem.
“We have to have the community come together and say, ‘We’re not going to allow you to continue to get away with this, we’re going to call you out on it and we’re going to make you do something about it.’“
