Two large explosions rocked an area near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing two people and injuring several others, CNN reports. Smoke could be seen billowing from Boston’s Copley Square as the joyous event was turned into a scene of chaos and destruction.

At least four people were being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. It is not known what caused the blast.  The explosions occurred at about 2:45 p.m., more than two hours after the first of the race’s nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line.

The race was stopped fter the explosions as was subway service into the area.

Authorities in New York City and Washington, D.C. stepped up security as well “until more about the explosion is learned.”
