Strawberry Letter: Cheating Ex Giving Gifts

Hi Steve and Shirley,

I dated a man for almost three years, who turned out to be liar and a cheater. I caught him the first time after we had been dating for about a year and decided to give him another chance because he seemed so sincerely sorry. Needless to say, the cheating continued and I finally broke it off with him about six months ago.

I have told him repeatedly that I do not wish to see him or talk to him. I tried being nice about it at first, but when that didn’t work I started to get mean about it until I just didn’t feel comfortable with myself and simply stopped all communications. I have recently started seeing someone new that I really am fond of, but my ex continues to try to contact me. He even dropped off an expensive gift for my birthday. My friends all think that I should keep the gift and not respond because they feel that he is using the gift as an attempt to make contact with me. I think I should send the gift back because I do not want anything from him and don’t think it is right to keep the gift.

Should I return the gift? And how can I make him understand that I really just want him to leave me alone?
