The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says that women between the ages of 40 and 49 should not get routine mammograms for early detection of breast cancer. For woman ages 50 to 75 the task force recommends routine screenings every two years.

Previously the groups recommendation was for routine screenings every year for women ages 40 and up. However, 15 percent of women detect breast cancer in their 40’s through mammograms. Contrary to that, many other women experience false positives, anxiety, and unnecessary biopsies as a result of the test according to data. The Task Force says that they aren’t against women getting mammograms in the 40’s. They just think that it shouldn’t be routine. Others think that insurance companies may drop mammogram coverage based on the new Task Force Recommendations.
