More information has come to light regarding the suspect in the deadly stabbing of Morgan Freeman’s step-granddaughter E’Dena Hines.

Lamar Davenport, the actress’ boyfriend, was on an alleged cocaine binge when he killed Hines, 33, outside of her apartment in New York City early Sunday morning. Statements from witnesses say Davenport was trying to perform an “exorcism” on the actress when he stabbed her in the back and torso a reported 15 times. He also continued to make stabbing motions with his hands while the knife was in her chest, according to PEOPLE.

Davenport was arraigned on second-degree murder charges on Wednesday. Police suspect Davenport met Hines at New York University (NYU), where they both went to college. The father of two graduated with an English degree, but was currently working in an auto repair shop. His past also revealed his trouble with the law. He was arrested six times while living in New York and Los Angeles.

PEOPLE reports:

In 2010, he was charged with petit larceny in New York. That same year, he was charged with possession of marijuana. (Both charges were later dropped.) In 2014, he was arrested by L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies and charged with cocaine possession. He agreed to go to rehab but skipped out on a February court hearing. A judge signed a bench warrant for his arrest.

Friends of the couple say Hines was aware of his past drug problem, and was trying to improve his life.

Davenport will appear in court Aug. 21.
