4 Dead, 3 Injured in Chattanooga Mass Shooting
On Thursday, a gunman shot dead four US Marines and injured three others at a military site in Chattanooga after opening fire in a recruiting station. The FBI is leading a “national security investigation” according to Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch and the US Attorney of the Eastern District of Tennessee William C. Killian has said that federal officials are “treating this as an act of domestic terrorism.” However, the FBI has yet to find any direct links between the shooter, Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, and any international terrorist organizations. James Holmes Convicted Of First-Degree Murder For Aurora, CO Theater Shooting
James Holmes has been found guilty of murder for killing 20 people and injuring over 70 others in the 2012 Aurora, CO theater shooting. The verdict was reached in only a little over a day; Holmes was found guilty of all 165 charges and the jury had rejected the shooter’s pleas to insanity that would have otherwise landed him with a sentencing to a mental institution, rather than imprisonment for life or execution. The penalty phase of Holmes’ trial will commence next Wednesday. Read more at CBS News.
Sandra Bland Might Have Been Battling Mental Illnesses
After the hashtag #IfIDieInCustody was trending on Twitter yesterday, some more disturbing news about Sandra Bland, the Chicago woman who died in police custody in Texas, has surfaced. A Facebook Video from March 1 features Bland smiling and speaking warmly into the camera, apologizing for her absence from social media and explaining her struggles with depression and PTSD—illnessess that could have been linked to her death. What’s more disturbing is that Bland had tried to post bail when she was imprisoned, a fee of only $500 that would have been charged to her friends and family. The bondsman Bland was working with claimed to have called Bland’s mother to post bail, but he refused to provide any further information on what happened next and why Bland was still stuck in her cell. Nigerian Town Hit With Bombing Attack, 9 Dead, 18 Injured
A young girl and an elderly woman conducted suicide bombings on Friday at Muslim prayer grounds in the town of Damaturu, a neighborhood in the northeastern Yobe state of Nigeria. No terrorist group has claimed the attack but the Boko Haram is suspected of being involved because of its modus operandi of using young girls and women to carry out bombing attacks near bus stations and markets. This attack comes just a day after 48 people were killed and 58 were injured in another set of bombings in the nearby city of Gombe. Read more at CNN.
Bill O’Reilly Gets His Ass Handed To Him On His Own Show
Maybe this isn’t news because it seems to happen to him every week. But the way Bill O’Reilly just got shut down on his own trashy FOX program is too priceless to keep to myself. O’Reilly has a habit of sending out his producer and camera crew to ambush personalities and public figures that deny requests to come onto his show, shouting and bombarding unsuspecting people with interview questions. When people don’t engage or are unable to even hear what the producers are saying, O’Reilly’s team splices together the footage and then claims that the person they were targeting was dodging their questions.
However, Scott Weiner, a supervisor for San Francisco that was being targeted for the Kathryn Steinle case, gave it to O’Reilly’s people straight when he was followed in the hallway outside of his office. Weiner flippantly rebuffed them, saying: “Fox News is not real news, and you’re not a reporter. I talk to real news only.” Weiner explained in another interview with ThinkProgress that O’Reilly’s team has recently been stalking various board supervisors around San Francisco to further the show’s agenda on spewing propaganda about undocumented immigrants. I just can’t. Read more at the Huffington Post.
