Proverbs 10:4 “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth. In all that you do, be willing to put in some effort and persevere to produce wealth.

Americans as a society are intrigued by sports. Currently we are in the midst of both the NBA and NHL playoffs. Baseball season just recently kicked off and by the time the NBA and NHL crown their champions, we will be rolling into the college and professional football seasons and then preparing for the baseball World Series. Go Tigers! I’m from Detroit.

We cannot escape sports and because of the potential riches and glory, heaped upon its stars, many of our children not only aspire to be but actually believe that they too will be the next sports Icon. The current U.S. population is over 300-million people. There are currently approximately 400 men playing in the NBA. That equates to approximately 0.000125% of our population that is currently on an NBA roster. When their playing careers are over too many former athletes suffer from depression, experience divorce and file for bankruptcy. The average NFL career is less than 5 years while the average life expectancy for a healthy American male is over 80 years.

Very few of us have the physical attributes that warrant a career in professional sports, but we all have a brain. Instead of encouraging young people to play games, we should encourage them to own the team. Team owners don’t lose their jobs, or their incomes, if they tear a ligament in their knee or break a bone. You don’t read headlines about franchise owners losing their homes and filing for bankruptcy. I’m impressed by the size of Lebron James’ paycheck but I am more impressed by the man that can afford to pay him—the owner. When Lebron can no longer play ball the owner will still be getting paid because he owns the whole team.

Become the lender and no longer the borrower. Spend less time playing and focus more on owning. In doing so, we transition from victims to victors. We conquer our opposition and reside in a position of protector, for those that cannot protect themselves.
