In September of 2014, singer August Alsina suffered a massive case of exhaustion that reportedly left him in a coma for the better part of three days. What people didn’t know is he’s also been battling an undisclosed illness that nearly cost him his vision. Alsina took to his Instagram account to post images of a surgical procedure, which he says will prevent him from becoming totally blind after already losing vision in his left eye.

“So I have this eye disease.. Blind in my left, and losing vision in my right,” he wrote on Instagram. “In order to prevent my eyesight from deteriorating I had to do this surgery. This shit is beyond painful and life be throwin’ a ni**a curve balls but what I’ve gained from it all is priceless… A lot of things that are so natural to us in life (like waking up and being able to see) we can take it for granted. Thank God the OG for allowing me to see.. The good the bad the ugly, I’m just glad to see.”

It’s unknown exactly what procedure was performed or the name of the disease, but the corresponding picture of Alsina having his eyes physically held open to receive what appeared to be laser treatment spoke to his description of the process as “beyond painful.”
