As previously reported Selma director Ava DuVernay is supposedly in talks with Marvel about working her magic on an upcoming superhero film. However, the name of another director in the running has been leaked.

Rope Of Silicon has Rick Famuyiwa, director of the Sundance Film Festival-hit Dope, as someone else to possibly helm Marvel’s Black Panther film in addition to DuVernay. At the moment DuVernay is the only director revealed to be eyed for the Captain Marvel film. It is possible that Famuyiwa could end up directing Black Panther and DuVernay does Captain Marvel, which would send a great message about hiring more directors of color to Hollywood. If both are chosen, DuVernay would be the first Black woman to direct a Marvel film and Famuyiwa the first Black man.

DuVernay has some experience with superhero films as she did promotional services for Spiderman 2. She is currently in the middle of a fundraising drive for the collective AFFRM (African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement), which supports and distributes Black independent films. You can learn more about the drive and contribute to it at ArrayAction.com.
