Michael Dunn, the Florida man who shot and killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis after a dispute over loud rap music, was found guilty on four of five charges.
According to reports, a jury found the White software engineer guilty of three counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of shooting a deadly missile into a vehicle during the Nov. 23, 2012 shooting, which took place in a convenience store parking lot in Jacksonville.
However, after 31 hours of deliberations over four days, the 12 jurors could not decide if Dunn was guilty of first-degree premeditated murder — meaning he was convicted for the reckless shooting, but not for the three shots that killed Davis, cutting through his liver, a lung and his aorta. As a result, Circuit Judge Russell Healey declared a mistrial and State Attorney Angela Corey said her office plans to retry Dunn for the top count.
Dunn insisted that he acted in self-defense when he fired 10 shots into the SUV and killed the unarmed Black teenager. The prosecution argued that the 47-year-old was simply angry because he was disrespected by a young Black man.
“This defendant was disrespected by a 17-year-old teenager, and he lost it. He wasn’t happy with Jordan Davis’ attitude. What was his response? ‘You’re not going to talk to me like that,’ ” Assistant State Atty. Erin Wolfson said. “He took these actions because it was premeditated. It was not self-defense.”
Sources said “Dunn showed no emotion as the verdicts were read” and “Davis’ parents each left the courtroom in tears.”
Davis’ mother Lucia McBath expressed gratitude for the verdict. “We are so grateful for the truth,” she said on the eve of what would have been her son’s 19th birthday. “We are so grateful that the jurors were able to understand the common sense of it all.”
Sentencing is scheduled for March 24. He faces at least 60 years in prison.
