TSA Rules: How To Handle New Rules When Traveling

The transportation security administration, known commonly as the TSA, was enacted after 911 for our protection but can be one of the most frustrating parts of traveling. Take your shoes off, throw away your liquids, stand in line…It all gets a little annoying when you’re trying to make your flight!

Even though there are a ton of rules for flying, here are a couple you may not have known about that will surprise you and can actually save you time!

1. There’s an app for that

TSA now has an app that you can download to your smart phone to quickly help you out with questions about what you can and cannot bring onto a plane. Get it here!

2. There’s a faster way to get through security

When you sign up for TSA Pre-Check, you have the ability to get through security faster, with your shoes, a belt and even a light jacket in tact. Oh, and did I mention, no wait in line? Costing around $100 and requiring an in-person interview, TSA Pre Check is a great option for frequent flyers looking to make the travel process less hectic.

3. 3-1-1

The TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons (3.4 ounce bottle, 1 quart-sized clear zip top bag, 1 bag per passenger) does not apply to liquid medication, baby formula or breast milk. No need to cut corners on these, all you need to do is declare them at the security check point!

4. You’re being profiled

Dozens of airports around the country use SPOT (screening passengers by observation techniques) in their security check points. TSA agents are trained to profile us by studying our facial ticks, body language and voices. If your vocal pitch changes, it can be seen as a sign of deceit or stress, same goes for changes in your face or body. Any passenger deemed to be displaying odd behavior will be pulled aside for more screening.

5. Pick the right line

At over 50 airports in the U.S., TSA lines are divided into categories like “Expert, Casual and Family/Medical Assistance” to help travelers move along based on the amount of assistance that is needed. Choose wisely and get ahead!

6. Wear your shoes

Kid’s aged 12 and under and adults over 75 are exempt of having to take off their shoes when going through security. They can also leave on light jackets. Lucky them.
