Sadly, another Black woman is facing discrimination for her hairstyle of choice.
Last month, we learned about 7-year-old Tiana Parker who was kicked out of an Oklahoma elementary school for her “distracting” dreds. Then there was meteorologist Rhonda Lee who was fired from her news station in Shreveport, La. for defending her TWA on Facebook. Earlier this week, Farryn Johnson shared her story of being fired from Hooters for rocking blond highlights. And now, Ashley Davis from St. Peters, Mo is speaking out about her experience.
According to reports, the 24-year-old was given an given an ultimatum from her job at Tower Loan: cut your dreadlocks or look for other employment.
“I’ve only been there for two months, and they came up with a policy. I feel like it`s degrading,” she told FOX News. “My worst nightmare is I wake up and all of my hair is gone. As far as cutting it goes, no way it’s like cutting me open I can`t do it. My supervisor saw me two weeks after she hired me and said I was doing a great job.”
The new company policy, implemented on September 21, 2013, states that “dreadlocks, braids, mohawks, mullets and other hairstyles are against company guidelines.” Since Davis is the only person in the office with one of the hairstyles listed above, she insists that it’s an issue of racial discrimination.
In response to the allegations, the loan company released a statement: “Tower Loan does not comment on individual personnel matters. However, Tower has an appearance policy that is clearly defined in its training manual. Tower believes a professional appearance is necessary for the success of the company.”
Despite the new policy, Davis said she plans to stand her ground. “My dreads I love them and I’m going to keep them,” she said. “My hair is a part of me and it makes me the professional and bubbly person I am.”
