Doctors have discovered that Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. is actually suffering from bipolar disorder, reported the Mayo Clinic on Monday.

The Rochester, Minn.-based clinic specified his condition as Bipolar II, which is defined as periodic episodes of depression and hypomania, a less serious form of mania, says the Huffington Post.

Bipolar II is a treatable condition that affects parts of the brain controlling emotion, thought and drive and is likely caused “by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors,” the clinic said.

Jackson left office suddenly on June 10. His father, who has been supportive throughout the process, said he’s responding well to the treatment.

Reports, however say that Jackson underwent weight loss surgery in 2004, which in turn affects the way he absorbs foods and medications.
