Today is the legendary Whitney Houston’s birthday. The iconic singer would have been 49 years old today.

Whitney was on her way to coming back at the time of her untimely and tragic death. She was involved in the remake of the Motown-inspired movie Sparkle, and fans will get a chance to see her final film role when the movie is released on August 17th.

Houston is the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits and the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly “Top Pop Album”) on the Billboard magazine year-end charts.

Houston’s first acting role was as the star of the feature film The Bodyguard which she starred in opposite Kevin Costner in 1992. The film’s original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Its lead single “I Will Always Love You,” became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. It was a song originally sung by Dolly Parton but Houston seemed to make it a classic with her signature melodious stamp on it.

From hits such as “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “The Greatest Love Of All,” “I Believe In You And Me” as well as a host of others, Houston was known for riveting and pivotal live performances and concerts. From her child Bobbi Kristina to her mother — famed gospel singer Cissy Houston — Whitney Houston is being remembered as one incomparable woman with a resounding voice and love for life.
