Dareal Demare Williams, Christopher Cain and Dorian Moragne have been sentenced to five years in prison, plus five years probation, for their violent, videotaped assault on Brandon White. The attack was considered a hate crime because White is gay and the attackers yelled anti-gay slurs during the beating.

Video of the assault went viral and was allegedly shot by Javaris Bradford, who remains at-large.

The three defendants read letters of apology to White in court, but White said that he doubted the sincerity of the apologies.

White said that he thought the sentences were fair, although LGBT advocates argued for much lesser sentences, saying that incarceration was not as important as education and that stricter sentences serve no one.
