D’Angelo has quietly been making a comeback, punctuated with a string of several shows in Europe recently, and now comes word that the Grammy Award-winning singer will give his first U.S. performance in 10 years at the 2012 Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.

D’Angelo will perform during the festival’s opening night. The music festival runs from July 6 to July 8 and will also feature Trey Songz, Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige, among many others.

D’Angelo’s last album was 2000’s critically-acclaimed Voodoo, which went platinum and won two Grammy Awards, including best R&B album. His 1995 debut, Brown Sugar, also went platinum and produced several hit singles.

In the past decade D’Angelo has been a bit of a recluse and has had numerous run-ins with the law. Just last month he settled a prostitution charge by pleading guilty to disorderly conduct after his March 2010 arrest.

D’Angelo is said to be working on a new album.
