Strawberry Letter 23: He Can’t be Serious

Steve & Shirley!!!

Ive been in a long distance relationship with a man 11 years my senior, for the past two and one half years. We have discussed being married and having children together. We both love each other very much, but I think my man is a commitment phobia.  A little background history he has been in two previous long term (one 11 year and one 8 year) relationships. Neither of those resulted in marriage.) Recently, I sat him down and told him it was time to start making plans soon. He got upset and proceeded to tell me that I was being aggressive and pressuring him. REALLY!?! So, I let him and the conversation go. We didn’t speak for almost a month, and here he comes calling, talking about how he loves and misses me so much, and he cant live without me. He wants to make it work. My thought is what about what I want. I feel like I cant trust him. It came time for some action and instead of saying he wasn’t ready, he pinned all of his frustrations on me for wanting to see results. I refuse to be one of those women who spend years on top of years dating a man with no commitment. What should I do?
