We recently found out that unemployment in the month of May saw the biggest decline in unemployment for black women compared to other racial and gender demographics. In 1890, for example, before the arrival of many migrant communities, 40 per cent of all black women were employed – more than any other racial group.

Black women have emerged triumphant in May’s official unemployment data, with a decrease of 10 per cent in unemployment from 13.7 per cent in April to 12.4 per cent in May.

Black joblessness has long far outstripped that of whites. And strikingly, the disparity for the first 10 months of this year, as the recession has dragged on, has been even more pronounced for those with college degrees, compared with those without.

<strong>Joblessness</strong> for 16-to-24-year-old <strong>black men</strong> has reached <strong>Great Depression</strong> proportions -- 34.5 percent in October, more than three times the rate for the general U.S. population.<!--more-->
