It's hard to believe that nine years have gone by since Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash. Her close friend and collaborator Missy Elliott recently answered some questions from MTV about the anniversary of Aaliyah's death and her influence on today's female R&B singers.

January 16th is Aaliyah's birthday. She would have been 31 today. Although her life was cut short by a plane accident in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001, her memory will not be forgotten anytime soon.
