Strawberry Letter: Forgiveness With Caution

Dear Steve and Shirley,

My fiances 16yr old daughter moved in with us, she was living with her maternal grandma when her mother abandoned her at the age of 3. I did everything for her that I did for my other kids. I have always treated my children with love, respect, and have quality family time. Last year I picked her up from school we were talking, she became upset when I mentioned my children as her siblings, she then began hitting me, leaving bruises all over my arm. I stopped the car she got out and called one of her family members to come get her. My fiance did not really address the issue. He gathered her things and took them to her and she has not been back since. He was going to have a family meeting with all of us to resolve the situation but it never happened. About 8 months later the girl called me to apologize, she seemed sincere. Now when we see her she speaks to me, hugs me, but I still have reservations about being around her. We are getting married, my fiance wants her in the wedding. How do I deal with this nervousness I feel when she is around? At least now I don’t feel sick to my stomach like before.
