Walmart Finally Gets Tap-to-Pay. What Shoppers Need to Know
- Walmart and Sam's Club are adding tap-to-pay at checkout, supporting digital wallets like Apple Pay.
- The rollout will reach all US locations by 2026, giving shoppers a faster, more convenient payment option.
- Tap-to-pay complements existing payment methods like Walmart Pay, providing customers more flexibility.
After years of waiting, Walmart and Sam’s Club shoppers are finally getting one of the checkout features many customers already use at other retailers: tap-to-pay.
If you’ve ever pulled out your phone at checkout, only to realize Walmart didn’t accept Apple Pay or other standard contactless payments, that frustration may soon be over. Walmart and Sam’s Club have started rolling out Tap to Pay at select U.S. stores, giving shoppers the option to pay with contactless cards, smartphones and smartwatches. The companies plan to have the technology available at all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026.
For shoppers who have gotten used to tapping their phone or card almost everywhere else, this is a long-awaited change.
What Walmart Shoppers Need to Know
Once a location has Tap to Pay, shoppers will be able to use an eligible contactless credit or debit card, smartphone or smartwatch at checkout. The new system supports popular digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, giving customers another way to pay without having to open the Walmart app. Walmart also says customers will be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to their digital wallets. Instead of scanning a code or opening an app, shoppers can simply hold their compatible phone, watch or card near the payment terminal and complete the transaction.
The change brings Walmart more in line with the payment experience shoppers have come to expect at many other retailers.
Is Tap-to-Pay Available at Atlanta Walmarts Yet?
The rollout began August 24 at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations, but Walmart has not released a public store-by-store list showing which locations currently have the feature. That means Atlanta-area shoppers may find Tap to Pay at some stores before others. Walmart says it expects the feature to reach all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026. If you visit your local Walmart and don’t see the contactless payment option yet, it doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem with your phone or card. The store may simply not have received the technology update.
For now, shoppers should look for the familiar contactless payment symbol on the checkout terminal.
What About Walmart Pay and Gas Stations?
Tap to Pay isn’t replacing Walmart Pay. Customers will still be able to use existing payment methods, including cash, traditional credit cards and Walmart Pay. Sam’s Club members can also continue using Scan & Go. The new system simply gives shoppers another option — and for customers who prefer paying with their phone or smartwatch, it could be the fastest option. If you’re hoping to use Tap to Pay at a Walmart gas station, however, you’ll have to wait. Walmart says contactless payments at its fuel stations are planned for mid-2027.
For now, the rollout is focused on checkout inside Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations.
Why Shoppers Are Paying Attention
For people who use their phones for practically everything, contactless payment has become part of the everyday shopping routine. You can grab your groceries, pick up household essentials and pay without pulling out your wallet. That convenience can be especially helpful when you’re carrying bags, shopping with children or simply trying to get in and out of the store quickly.Walmart’s decision also comes as digital wallets have become increasingly common among consumers, making the retailer’s previous lack of standard tap-to-pay options more noticeable.
After years of promoting its own payment systems, Walmart is finally giving customers the option many have been asking for.The rollout won’t happen everywhere at once, but all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations are expected to have Tap to Pay by the end of 2026.
For shoppers, the change is ultimately about convenience.
The next time you walk into Walmart, you may finally be able to leave your wallet in your pocket and simply tap your way through checkout.
