BMW Recalls Nearly 90,000 Vehicles Over Fire Risk
BMW North America is recalling about 87,394 vehicles in the United States because an engine starter could overheat and pose a fire risk, officials say. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified the issue and asked BMW to act. Affected owners will have the starter replaced for free at authorized dealers.
Models in the recall include recent versions of BMW cars and SUVs. Owners will start getting notification letters about the recall in March. BMW also set up a customer service line to answer questions about the fix and recall process.
What Owners Should Know
So far, BMW and regulators have not reported any injuries tied to the starter problem. Still, owners whose vehicles are part of the recall should schedule the free repair soon to reduce any potential risk.
Dealers will replace the engine starter at no cost as soon as replacement parts are available. Affected drivers can check their Vehicle Identification Number on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website beginning in late March.
