Strawberry Letter 23: Should I Ride Down There Or Not?

Dear Steve and Shirley,

I’m a 33 year old man who comes from a large family of 3 brothers and 4 sisters. I recently received a phone call from my father, telling me that my brother in-law put his hands on my sister. So immediately, my 3 brothers and I “rode on down there” looking for my brother in-law.

We could find him at home, his job, or his mother’s house. The next day, my brother in-law calls me wanting to explain his side. He tells me that he walked in on my sister and another man in the “the act” and lost control of his emotions and is deeply sorry. My sister confirmed his story and offered no explanation as to why she did this. I know that there is no excuse to hit a woman, but if there were an excuse, this would be it.

I understand where he is coming from, yet I still feel like I should defend my sister. My father still thinks we should deal with him and my brothers will do whatever I decide. Do I let it go or ride on down there?
