On Saturday, family and friends gathered at Fairfield Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia, to celebrate the life of Adriana Smith, a 31-year-old mother whose tragic story has captured national attention. As reported by Fox 5, Smith, who was declared brain-dead in February following a medical emergency during her pregnancy, was kept on life support for months to give her unborn child a chance at survival.

Smith’s baby, named Chance, was delivered prematurely via emergency Cesarean section on June 13, weighing just 1 pound, 13 ounces. Four days later, on June 17, Smith was removed from life support. The timing was especially poignant, as Smith would have celebrated her 32nd birthday on June 15.

The circumstances surrounding Smith’s case have sparked widespread debate over Georgia’s abortion laws. According to her family, doctors at Emory Hospital informed them that they could not remove Smith from life support due to the state’s ban on abortion after cardiac activity is detected, typically around six weeks of pregnancy. However, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr later clarified that the law does not require medical professionals to keep a brain-dead woman on life support, stating, “Removing life support is not an action ‘with the purpose to terminate a pregnancy.’”

The case has drawn attention from lawmakers and advocates. Georgia Congresswoman Nikema Williams introduced a resolution condemning restrictive abortion laws, calling Smith’s situation a “tragic and deeply disturbing case.” Williams expressed her condolences to Smith’s family, stating, “Adriana Smith deserved better at every point of this tragedy.”

Smith’s family is now focused on supporting her two children: newborn Chance and her 7-year-old son. A GoFundMe campaign launched to assist the family has raised over $466,000 of its $490,000 goal, reflecting an outpouring of support from the community and beyond.
