Kirk Franklin Reflects on Faith, Culture, and Legacy

Renowned gospel artist Kirk Franklin recently sat down with Ryan Cameron Uncensored for an enlightening conversation that touched on faith, culture, and his illustrious career. During the interview, Franklin shared his thoughts on receiving the highly coveted BET Ultimate Icon Award, his role in bridging gospel with hip-hop, and his latest creative endeavor, the digital series Den of Kings.

When asked about the significance of being honored as an icon, Franklin expressed humility, saying, “It’s just very humbling… I was not expecting it, didn’t even see it coming.” He acknowledged the company of other cultural giants like Mariah Carey and Snoop Dogg, adding, “And I’m the church boy, you know? I just want to make sure that I represent well.”

The conversation shifted to Franklin’s unique ability to blend gospel with secular music genres, especially hip-hop. Reflecting on this evolution, he remarked, “It was destined to happen. You can’t deny the influence of hip-hop, especially when so many of these voices were raised in somebody’s church.” Franklin’s collaborations, including his recent work with rising rapper Glorilla, highlight his ongoing relevance across generations and genres.

Apart from music, Franklin shared details about his new digital series, Den of Kings, which he described as a platform for “men having manly conversations over dinner.” The show’s premiere, featuring figures like DC Young Fly and Kountry Wayne, was released on Father’s Day. “It’s shot brilliantly, it’s beautiful, and it’s so needed,” Franklin said, emphasizing the importance of honest dialogue within the Black community.

Throughout the interview, Franklin’s authenticity and passion for faith stood out. “We’ve done people a disservice by throwing scriptures at them instead of truth and transparency,” he said, advocating for a more candid approach to religion.
