A major downtown street is shut down Tuesday morning after a water main break overnight caused a big sinkhole.

The hole, which measured about 20 feet by 8 feet and was about 10 to 15 feet deep, swallowed a couple of lanes of Centennial Olympic Park Drive at West Peachtree Place, near the Georgia Aquarium.

Crews from the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management are not surprised by the break, since the water main is nearly 100 years old and part of the city’s aging sewer system. Crews stopped the flow of water gushing from the 12-inch main by 5 a.m.

There was no word on when the hole might be repaired, and it could take days before the road is repaired and reopened.
