Over the past year, Camille Cosby has continued to stand by her man in the tsunami of rape accusations against comedic legend Bill Cosby. But a recent subpoena could force the wife to testify against her husband of 51 years in a pending defamation case.
And Cosby’s lawyers are not having it.
On Friday, they filed papers in a federal court blocking the subpoena, stating that Mrs. Cosby has “no first-hand knowledge” of the women’s rape allegations and that this is “nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to pressure defendant in the face of subjecting his wife to the shame and embarrassment of responding to questions about his alleged infidelities and sexual misconduct,” CNN reported.
Cosby lawyers also emphasized, “[that] information that was the subject of confidential communications between Mrs. Cosby and defendant is protected by Massachusetts’ spousal disqualification rule.”
This subpoena is in conjunction to a defamation suit in Massachusetts filed by seven women who claim Cosby raped them. These women’s lawyer, Joseph Cammarata, filed the summons demanding that Mrs. Cosby testify in a hotel on Jan 6, 2016 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Despite spousal privilege, Cammarata believes that since Mrs. Cosby was her husband’s business manager, his line of questions fall within a fair and legal scope that doesn’t undermine the law.
“I think she has information that’s relevant to the litigation in this matter,” Cammarata said on Friday, wrote USA Today.
The seven women who are suing Cosby are a small pool of the whopping 50 women that have come out in the past year accusing the star of sexually assaulting them, including supermodel Beverly Johnson. Most of these women’s stories show a similar pattern of Cosby allegedly using his power and status to prey on them, slip drugs into their drink and subsequently rape them.
However, with mounting legal battles piling up against Cosby, including an ongoing civil case in California, he continues to claim his innocence, saying that he is the “true victim.”
Earlier this week, Cosby filed a defamation countersuit against the seven women who accused him of defamation, claiming they are making false rape claims for financial gain.
