Oprah made the shocking announcement that she had a child named Canaan who was born prematurely.

During a speaking tour in Melbourne, Australia, the media mogul revealed to 12,000 attendees intimate details of her troubled childhood, according to The Herald Son in Australia.

At the age of 14, Oprah reveals ‘I did have a son. And I named him Canaan because Canaan means new land, new life.’

The OWN creator didn’t come up with a name for her son until 40 years after he died. She explains,

‘I did an interview with a reporter before I came to Australia and she said you should name the baby son who died.’ This candid conversation led her to name the child.

She went on to motivate the crowd, explaining to them despite her dark past, she’s always had a purpose.

‘I have a calling. If you are born, there’s a reason for you to be here.’

Oprah, who is worth an estimated $3.2 billion, explained that her grandmother would have never imagined her success–she only wished one day she could work for some ‘good white folks who might let her take food home.’

The talk show legend definitely defied the limited expectations that people had for her life.

It’s always encouraging to see a black woman standing flawed, in all her strength and beauty, telling the story of overcoming difficulty.

Her son may not have survived, but she definitely found Canaan, a new land, in her career.
