Inmate’s Estate Awarded $2.5 Million After Prisoner Dies Of Thirst In Custody

The family of Michael Kerr has reached a settlement of over $2 million with the NC Department of Public Safety after Kerr died of dehydration following 35 days of solitary confinement. Kerr, 54, suffered from mental illness and had been cited for violations from prison staff shortly before his death. Reports say that authorities failed to give Kerr’s treatment for his schizophrenia while he was imprisoned. Read more the Huffington Post.
Target Sues Man After He Saved A Customer Who Was Stabbed By A Homeless Man

These are one of those news stories you just can’t make up. Michael Turner is being named in a lawsuit from Target after he caught a homeless man that stabbed 16-year-old Allison Meadows inside one of the franchise’s Pennsylvania locations. Target says that if Turner hadn’t chased after the homeless man with a baseball bat, Meadows wouldn’t have been stabbed. However, both Turner and Meadows’ attorney argue that Turner was a hero and that Target is attacking Turner so that it is not prosecuted for failing to keep its customers safe. Despite Economic Recovery, More US Children Suffer From Poverty Today Than Before Recession

A new study from the latest Kids Count Data Book says that poverty among American children has increased, as 22 percent of children were living in poverty in 2013 versus 18 percent in 2008. Experts attribute single-parent households and lack of secure employment as leading causes behind the problem. On a brighter note, high school graduation rates are at a record high and children are increasingly gaining access to health insurance. Read more at the New York Times.
