PBS has halted the third season production of Finding Your Roots after an investigation proved the omission of Ben Affleck’s slave-owning ancestor violated ethical guidelines.
The network also postponed the order of a fourth season until they are confident in the show’s editorial standards, Mashable reports. The third season of the theology-themed show, hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., was scheduled to premiere in September.
The program elicited backlash earlier this year, when it was revealed an October 2014 episode featuring Affleck was skewed after the actor asked that information about his great-great-great grandfather be omitted. The distant relative owned 24 slaves. Sony email hackings uncovered conversations between company executive Michael Lynton and Gates. While the host made it clear the omission would violate the rules, it was done anyway.
Affleck released an apology in April, confessing he was embarrassed by the news.
PBS continued their own investigation and plans to hire a fact-checker and an independent genealogist to review episode findings.
Gates released a statement apologizing for the incident.
“I want to thank PBS for its thoughtful internal review,” Gates said. “I sincerely regret not discussing my editing rationale with our partners at PBS and WNET and I apologize for putting PBS and its member stations in the position of having to defend the integrity of their programming.”
Affleck’s episode has been removed from the show’s website.
