In what some see as professional football taking stronger action against players behaving badly (or maybe it’s the NFL practicing CYA), the Chicago Bears have released player Ray McDonald, who was arrested for the second time in less than a year on domestic violence charges.
The Bears took a chance on McDonald, who last year was named as a sexual assault suspect and arrested for felony domestic violence.
On Monday, the team released a brief statement confirming that they were cutting ties with McDonald, 30, who was arrested earlier that day on DV and child endangerment charges in Santa Clara, CA.
The NFL.com reports that in this latest incident, officers were dispatched at around 4 a.m. to a disturbance at McDonald’s Santa Clara residence where they learned McDonald “physically assaulted the victim while she was holding a baby.” McDonald left the residence before police arrived, and was later arrested in San Jose.
The defensive tackle had just been kicked to the curb by the San Francisco 49ers in December 2014 after being named as a suspect in a still-open sexual assault case. McDonald was also arrested in August of last year on felony domestic violence charges, but not charged by the state after his pregnant fiancé did not press charges.
The beleaguered NFL, which came under fire in the way it handed the Ray Rice domestic violence case last year, has been struggling to clean up its act, launching the “No More” domestic violence campaign (see the Super Bowl video here) and taking stronger stances against players whose violence spills from the field into real life.
