Two unarmed Black men have reportedly been shot by police early Thursday in Olympia, WA.
The men, brothers in their 20s, were identified as Andre Thompson, 24, and Bryson Chaplin, 21.
They were accused of trying to steal beer at the Olympia Safeway, then fleeing the scene. Police officer Ryan Donald, a 35-year-old who has been on the force for three years, claims that one of the young men attacked him with a skateboard when he got out of his car.
Both men were then shot in the chest, then rushed to separate hospitals. Chaplin is in stable condition, while Thompson is in critical condition.
Donald was not wearing a bodycam.
According to The Olympian,
The men attempted to steal beer and were confronted by employees. The men threw the items at employees and left. They called the police and gave them a description of the suspects. The police officer claims one of the suspects attacked him as he exited the squad car. The officer shot the suspect. After another confrontation, he shot the other suspect multiple times in the torso.
The Mayor of Olympia Stephen H. Buxbaum released a statement,
“It deeply saddens me that we have two young people in the hospital as the result of an altercation with an officer of the law,” Buxbaum said. “We are committed to open dialogue where people can gather and share their feelings, show their compassion and stand up for what I think represents our values.”
