Unfortunately we have received confirmation that singer Johnny Kemp has passed away at the age of 55. He passed on Thursday, April 16.

Kemp is best known for his 1988 smash hit “Just Got Paid.” Information is very scarce right now but we will keep you updated as we learn more.

Reach Media, who is owned by the same parent company as our sister site Hello Beautiful, gave us the following statement:

“We have received confirmation that Johnny Kemp has passed away. We do not have any other details. We can confirm he was also not on the ship.”

Our sources tell us that Kemp was scheduled to perform with Teddy Riley this week. No further details have been confirmed.

Kemp started his singing career as a teenager in the Bahamas, before moving to New York in 1979. Kemp’s hits include “Just Another Lover,” and “Dancin’ with Myself” off his Secrets of Flying album. Kemp also appeared Keith Sweat’s DVD Sweat Hotel Live.

We just can’t help but think about “Love & Basketball,” as his most famous song, “Just Got Paid” was featured on the soundtrack. We’ll be playing this hit all weekend. Our hearts go out to his wife Deidre, his two sons, his family and friends.
