Former Atlanta Public School Superintendent Beverly Hall has died after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 66 years old.

Hall has been battling breast cancer as dozens of teachers stand trial for the cheating scandal that rocked Atlanta and the nation. The cheating scandal occurred when Hall was head of the school district. She faced racketeering and conspiracy charges but has been too ill to stand trial. Hall resigned from her position in 2010, one year after the American Association of School Administrators named her National Superintendent of the Year.

Hall denied any involvement in the cheating scandal and blamed staff for allowing widespread cheating on standardized tests. She served as APS superintendent for 12 years.
