Soledad O’Brien is releasing the latest installment of her “Black In America” documentary news series and it will premiere on Tuesday, November 18th at 9 p.m. EST on CNN. This installment is called “Black & Blue” and it will take us into the lives of the police officers who insist they’re fighting crime and well as the other side–Black men who are frisked without cause, and it will explore how the lives of these young men are torn apart by overzealous and over aggressive policing. This couldn’t be any more timely, as we face a post Vonderrit Myers, Ezell Ford, Oscar Grant, Eric Garner, Michael Brown world. These are all men who were killed by the police in situations that could have gone very differently had the offices not criminally profiled them all.

“Black & Blue” will portray the personal stories of the men affected by those aggressive policing tactics and it poignantly inserts shocking video footage of police interactions with young Black men, offering a all-too-real perspective of the NYPD officers who believe in “Stop & Frisk.” These same officers confess that the racial profiling tactic was less about fighting crime and more about fulfilling arrest quotas.
“What is so shocking is that this police practice was used around the country – and in some places still is – with the theory that police were stopping criminals,” said O’Brien. “It’s shocking that the city where this was popularized was stopping so many innocent people.” As O’Brien reports with co-directors Ross Tuttle and Steve Maing, the NYPD reportedly made more than 5 million stops between 2002 and 2013. Of those stopped, more than 80 percent were Black or Latino, and 88 percent of the stops did not result in arrests, summons or evidence of any crime.
The one-hour Black in America special, BLACK & BLUE, is produced by O’Brien’s Starfish Media Group. The special will premiere Tuesday, Nov.18 at 9:00pm, with encores at 12:00am, and again on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 7:00pm. All times are Eastern on CNN/U.S.
