But who is Amina Buddafly, besides another up-and-comer poised to get the gossip mills churning? She’s apparently “started a new relationship” with rapper-turned-manager Peter Gunz, according to MarketWatch, and that’s making for some intrigue on the “Love & Hip Hop” set, especially since Gunz has lived for years with Wallace, the mother of his two boys.

The question, “Who is Amina Buddafly?” is answered quite thoroughly on the Vh1 website, and while there’s no mention of Peter Gunz in her bio, hers is quite an interesting story. Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, Amina Schmahl, aka Amina Buddafly, is the product of a music-loving German mother and Senegalese father who played a jazz musician. She could apparently sing before she could talk, and by the time she was 13, she’d begun writing songs. Alongside her older sister Sophie and her twin Jazz, she formed a trio called Black Buddafly, and in 1997, the group signed with BMG Germany. After releasing the single “Choyce,” they moved to New York City with little more than “$600 and a dream,” according to Vh1, and before long, they’d signed with Def Jam and J Records.

Who is Amina Buddafly? She’s a tenacious lady. After Black Buddafly broke up and Sophie and Jazz had returned to Germany, she stuck with the music business and taught herself piano. Influenced by a range of artists—everyone from Mariah Carey to the Bangles—she became a songwriter and producer, and her cannon of songs includes some 400 compositions.

“Music is a feeling and I believe only if it comes from my heart and I really love it, people can feel it,” Amina Buddafly said, according to Vh1. Who is Amina Buddafly, then? She’s a true believer and multi-talented artist, and while it remains to be seen how she’ll fit with the other cast members on “Love & Hip Hop”—early reports indicate a love triangle involving Peter Gunz and Tara Wallace—the show is a constant wellspring of drama and intrigue, so the relatively obscure artist is no doubt headed for fame—if not infamy. By this time next year, the only people asking, “Who is Amina Buddafly?” will be those without cable or the Internet—folks who live under rocks, in other words.
