Subject: She Wants To Be Mommy & Daddy

Dear Steve and Shirley,

I have been with my wife for seven years. We got married about a month ago and we have two kids together. My 4 month old baby girl is my heart and I love my son the same. The problem is every time I get on my son’s case, she has a big problem with it. One time my son was acting up and I went to whip him and she punched me in the face and knocked the lens out of my glasses. She told me she was about to call the police and I am a nurse and a domestic violence charge could cause me to lose my license and she knows it. She tries to use it to control me and when that does not work, she will cut the sex off for weeks, sometimes months, saying stuff like, I can’t whip him because I don’t spend any time with him and I wasn’t there when he was a baby. But a while after he was born, she moved in with me and I quit working nights and started spending a lot of time with my son, even helping coach his soft ball team. Still, every time I put my foot down, she and I would start fighting. I often tell her if she wanted to be mommy and daddy she should have impregnated herself. My five-year old son pushes me and when she undermines me in front of him, he just laughs like he runs the show. When it’s just me and him, he does whatever I say. If I ever have had to whip him, it’s been with a paddle on his butt. He tells her I am mean to him. He is a child and he’s just competing for his mother’s attention, so I am not mad at my boy. I just feel like I am the only real parent here. I know I am not his friend, I am his daddy! She doesn’t understand I am the man of this house. I will make sure we both listen to your advice with an open mind.
