A 13-year-old boy was brutally attacked on his school bus by bigger and older students, while the bus driver called for help…and didn’t do anything else beyond that. The young boy was pinned to the floor between the seats and the bullies’ pummelling fists and angry kicks. The Florida bus driver, John Moody tried tirelessly to call for him, but never lifted a finger to get the teens off their victim. This attack left the 13-year-old with two black eyes and a broken arm.

The attack took place July 9 in Pinellas County, Florida, but the horrific cell phone video — and the surveillance video — came out only recently. The display of violence without any real assistance is shocking. You can hear Moody yelling at the attackers, begging them to leave the boy alone, but the would not stop. He then asked dispatch for help, which is what he’s required to do.
Begging them to send someone quickly, Moody complained, “They’re about to beat this boy to death over here. There’s nothing I can do.” The 64-year-old driver was admittedly too afraid to step in.
“And I did all can,” he told CNN affiliate WFLA. “I was looking. It was like I was in shock. I was petrified.”
The Chief of Gulfport Police Department, Robert Vincent begged to differ, claiming, “There was clearly an opportunity for him to intervene and or check on the welfare of the children or the child in this case and he didn’t make any effort to do so.”
According to Pinellas County school policy, the bus driver isn’t required to intervene. He is only required to call dispatch and he could indeed step in, only if he feels it’s safe. Other counties in Florida forbids drivers from stopping fights.
Police said Moody could have given first aid to the victim after the attackers jumped off the bus, but Moody claims the victim “skedaddled” off the bus once his attackers fled.
The three older boys who attacked the 13-year-old have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Why did they attack him? Police say the victim told officials at their dropout prevention school that one of them had tried to sell him drugs.
Apparently the attack is still scarring Moody, who retired two weeks after the attack and said, “I wanted to help him so bad. I wanted to help him.”
