After purchasing the Los Angeles Dodgers, NBA legend turned entrepreneur Magic Johnson has set his sights on an African-American entertainment institution, Soul Train.

Magic said on the Wendy Williams Show that he has purchased Soul Train and plans on bringing it back to television. Another thing Johnson will be developing out of the Soul Train brand is a biopic of the late Don Cornelius’ life. When he appeared on The Wendy Williams Show, Magic revealed preliminary details about his plans for the series and film.

Johnson told Williams: “We’re talking about a movie of Don Cornelius, a movie of his life. He did a wonderful job of introducing us all to Soul Train.”

Many are concerned the format of Soul Train won’t fit into today’s television landscape. Magic isn’t so sure himself, but he plans on taking a risk because of the brand’s legacy.

“Can we bring it back to TV? Because most of us, or our parents, learned how to dance from watching Soul Train,” Magic said. “It’s a great brand.”
