Atlanta City Council approved a ban on smoking at city parks on Monday.

The ban will go into effect as soon as Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed signs the measure.  Reed has said he supports the ordinance introduced by councilmember Alex Wan.

The only councilmember against the ban was Howard Shook of Buckhead. He says police have enough to do without worrying about people smoking in city parks.

Violators could face up to $1,000 fine.

There will likely be a warning period before enforcement starts.
