The new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial was finally given a proper dedication on the National Mall on Sunday after its opening in August. The original dedication was canceled in August because of Hurricane Irene.

Thousands of people attended the dedication, including the King family, Aretha Franklin, poet Nikki Giovanni, Cicely Tyson, Congressman John Lewis, civil rights legend Joseph Lowery, Dick Gregory, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, and President Barack Obama, who arrived with his wife and two daughters.

President Obama saluted Dr. King as a man who “stirred our conscience” and made the Union “more perfect.”

“I know we will overcome,” Obama proclaimed. “I know this, because of the man towering over us.”
