Reggae star Buju Banton was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on Thursday for conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine. Banton was also found guilty of another drug trafficking offense and a gun charge. In 2009, he was arrested during a Drug Enforcement Agency sting operation after police claimed he tried to buy cocaine from undercover officials. Buju later testified that he was just bragging to the informant, but a video of Banton testing cocaine in a Florida warehouse convinced the jury that he was guilty. He originally faced 15 years but U.S. District Judge James S. Moody threw out the gun charge which would have given Buju a extra five years. This was due to Moody receiving dozens of letters pleading for leniency from his children, an NBA player and actor Danny Glover, who convince the judge that Banton is a “role model, philanthropist and spiritual leader in the community.” The dancehall artist will serve his time at the FCI prison facility in Miami.
