If you’re a football fan, avid or casual, then you’ve heard the rumblings. You’ve noticed how undoubtedly similar this New York Giants team is to the 2007 squad, a team that got on a hot streak late and went all the way to the Super Bowl and ended what would have been a historic season for the once 18-0 Patriots. Don’t get it twisted though; this is not the same exact team, they’re BETTER and for a couple of reasons.

A major contrast this team has with its 07’ counterpart is its absence of two former difference makers on both sides of the ball. On defense it was the well known sack king- Michael Strahan. Strahan holds the single season record for sacks and will most likely pass rush his way right into the hall of fame when he becomes eligible. On the other side of the ball it was Plaxico Burress. Yes the man who many non football fans would know for channeling his inner Cheddar Bob and shooting himself in the leg in a nightclub after the 2007 season. That incident (unfortunately) overshadowed his game clinching touchdown catch in the super bowl just days before.

Although, these guys are gone and were great in their Giant careers, they’ve been replaced with some youthful playmakers that any of the other 31 teams would love to have. The Giants (still) have a ferocious pass rush, who don’t fall too far from their super bowl tree ranked third this year with 48 sacks as opposed to the 50 they tallied in 07. Instead of Strahan this group is led by the second year phenom Jason Pierre Paul, who had a whopping 16.5 sacks this year. Veteran’s Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, two holdovers from the Super Bowl team, are still there and balling. They also replaced Plaxico and that group of receivers with some young blood. The giants trio of Manningham, Cruz, and Nicks, who in particular is setting postseason receiving records, are playing at Pro Bowl levels right now.

The biggest reason why the Giants will win the Superbowl is Eli Manning. Yes the same Eli manning that threw a league high 25 interceptions one year ago and would often times have you scratching your head thinking “this guy is Peyton’s brother?!” Well this has been a career defining year for Eli as he ranked 7^th in passer rating, set a career high in yards and completions, while keeping his interceptions to a modest 16. The Same Eli who in the beginning of the season was mocked and ridiculed for saying he was an Elite quarterback. After winning his second playoff game in Lambeau field, one of the most difficult places to play, no one has a right to argue with him. He turned out a sensational performance and is the number one reason this team has had success this season. So with only 2 victories keeping him from his second Superbowl, the next time Eli says he’s elite, not a single person should laugh or chuckle, in fact he doesn’t even have to, his play says it all.

Brandon Marshall Helps AFC To Victory At Pro Bowl

When NFL players go into the pro Bowl, they usually have a lacksidasical attitude towards the game. Though there were a few glimpses of that in this past Sunday’s game, the 2012 Pro Bowl was a game filled with replay worthy plays and a star turn for the Miami Dolphins’ wide receiver, Brandon Marshall.

Marshall caught six passes for 176 yards and set a Pro Bowl record with four touchdowns. The wide receiver had a touchdown in each quarter, which includes the 74 yarder early in the game. That play is sure to be an ESPN staple for days to come. After winning MVP for helping the AFC best the NFC with 59-41, Marshall was quoted as saying, ”You never know when you’re going to be back and I wanted to go all out today because it could be my last Pro Bowl.”

The 59 points by the AFC was a high for the Pro Bowl, and the 100 points posted by both teams is a touchdown short of tying the points scored record set in 2004′s Pro Bowl. 36 players made their first appearance in this year’s Pro Bowl. Cam Newton and Andy Dalton replaced Superbowl bound shot callers, Eli Manning and Tom Brady, making this the first time two rookie quarter backs played. The two played the whole second half.

In a nail-biting OT game that almost broke Twitter, The New York Giants defeated the San Franscisco 49ers 20 to 17 to win the NFC Championship. They will now face the AFC champion New England Patriots in rematch of Super Bowl XLII in 2008. The Giants spoiled the Patriots undefeated season with their win in that contest.

A weekend of great football games was punctuated by the exit of the defending champion Green Bay Packers. The NY Giants defeated the “Cheeseheads” 37 to 20 thanks to stifling defense and one amazing Hail Mary TD pass from QB Eli Manning to Hakeem Nicks in the first half.

Now the Giants will face the San Francisco 49ers, who had an impressive win against the New Orleans Saints, in the NFC Championship game next week.

Ray Lewis and his Baltimore Ravens knocked off the Houston Texans to advance to the AFC title game against the New England Patriots. The Patriots ended the Cinderella run of Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos with a 45 to 10 spanking.

Good News For New York Giants Victor Cruz!

The world was so consumed with the January 7th birth of Jay-Z and Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter, that the arrival of New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz‘s first child went under the radar. His first child was born on January 9th, and she was named Kennedy.

Elaina Watley, the longtime girlfriend of Victor Cruz, is the mother. About his daughter, Victor Cruz told said, It’s amazing just to see her and to hold her in my arms. It’s been an amazing feeling, and I can’t wait to raise her and teach her all the good stuff … Every time I’m out there, I’m out there running around for her and catching the ball for her, so she’s always on my mind.”

Victor Cruz and the New York Giants will play the Green Bay Packers tomorrow (January 15th) in the NFL playoffs.

Cam Newton Breaks Rookie Passing Record

Cam Newton, the NFL’s 1st round draft pick and 2010 Heisman Trophy Winner, has now added another milestone to his young career. During Sunday’s win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the Quarterback for the Carolina Panthers threw for 171 yards breaking the NFL’s rookie record for passing yards held by Peyton Manning. Going into the game, Newton only need 18 yards to break the 3,739 mark and got that on his first pass.

Netwon also broke a team record for passing with a 91-yard TD toss to Brandon Lafell, the longest offensive TD in Panthers history.

Colts Win, Packers Lose & Tebow Is Mortal

It was a statement day in the NFL this Sunday. The one team that was undefeated, The Green Bay Packers, lost their first game and the winless Colts obtained their first W of the season.

The Packers had their 19-game winning streak (going back to last season) ended by the Kansas City Chiefs, losing 19 to 14. Rodgers threw for 235 yards and scored two touchdowns, but was without starters Greg Jennings and James Starks. The ’72 Miami Dolphins can break out the champagne again because their undefeated record will stand for another year.

On the other side of the coin the winless Indianapolis Colts, who have been without star quarterback Peyton Manning all season, finally got in the win column against the Tennessee Titans. Lifted by Donald Brown’s career record 161 rushing yards and a touch down the Colts won 27-13.

Lastly, in the most hyped game of the week, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots ran up the scoreboard on Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos to hand them their first loss since he took over as Quarterback.

In recent weeks Tebow had amassed a cult-like following after leading his team to several unlikely comeback wins. The Christian Tebow’s displays of faith took center stage as his team racked up victories, but the Pat’s were clicking on all cylinders today.

Ndamukong Suh Denies Stomping Packers Lineman [VIDEO]

Michael Vick Suffers Concussion In Loss To Falcons [VIDEO]

Michael Vick’s return to Atlanta to face his old football team did not end the way he’d hoped. Despite starting the game with a fundamentally sound performance, his Eagles fell to the Falcons 35-31. Vick’s performance in the dome was up and down as he abandoned his trademark footwork and remained in the pocket delivering more disciplined throws. He scored two touch down passes but also fumbled the ball twice and threw one interception.

The Eagles were ahead 31-21 when Vick left the game with a concussion. Backup Vince Young was out with a hamstring injury so third string QB Mike Kafka was literally left holding the ball.

Cam Newton Sets Rookie Record In NFL Debut

Cam Newton, the No. 1 pick in this year’s NFL draft, set a rookie record in his debut as the Carolina Panthers starting Quarterback. The Auburn alumnus and Heisman winner completed 24 of 37 passes for 422 yards – the most for any rookie in his NFL debut. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get his team the win, and the Panthers fell 28-21 to the Arizona Cardinals.

Newton, who grew up in College Park, was not too interested in the statistical high mark, considering that he is not used to losing. “The last time I lost a game was Navarro Junior College,” said Newton, who was sacked four times. “What do you want me to say, it feels great? It is not a comfortable feeling for me.”

Next week Cam and the Panthers play their first home game of the season against the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.

Titans Pay Chris Johnson $53 Million To Extend Contract

Running back Chris Johnson has made a deal with the Tennessee Titans for $30 Million guaranteed and $53 total. For the past three seasons Johnson has led the NFL in yards rushing but was only going to earn $1.065 million this season. Looking for a new deal, Johnson refused to report to camp missing the entire pre-season.

Johnson clashed with critics on Twitter who called him greedy:

But he has finally put the drama behind him with this contract extension.

“He’ll sign tomorrow and take his physical and be ready to start practicing,” Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said Thursday night before Tennessee played New Orleans in a final preseason game. “It was a tough negotiation, but both sides gave some and we got it done.”

Johnson ran for 2,0006 yards in 2009 and became only the sixth man in NFL history to surpass 2,000 yards in a season.
