5.9 Earthquake Strikes Near D.C., Felt Along East Coast [VIDEO]

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck Tuesday near the nation’s capital and sent shock waves up and down the East Coast, with some people saying they even felt the quake in metro Atlanta.

According to CNN, there were no immediate reports of injuries, and only minor damage to buildings.

The quake, which struck at 1:51 p.m., was shallow — just 3.7 miles deep — and was located 83 miles southwest of Washington and 41miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia.

A number of other buildings were evacuated, as far away as North Carolina and New York. Washington’s National Cathedral reported three five- to eight-foot pinnacles had broken from the central tower. The building was evacuated and closed to the public.

Wyclef & Pras Make Peace In Haiti

With tomorrow marking the one year anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, former Haitian presidential hopeful, Wyclef Jean has made peace with his former Fugees bandmate, Pras.

The two had a falling out during Jean’s unsuccessful run for president of Haiti when Pras came out in support of Wyclef’s opponent. However, the two have left that disagreement in the past in honor of their homeland.

Wyclef tweeted a photo of the two after he ran into Pras while on his way to Haiti.

World Bank Cancels Haiti’s Debt To Aid Reconstruction

WASHINGTON — The World Bank said Friday it had cancelled Haiti’s remaining debt to help the impoverished country recover from a devastating earthquake four months ago.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, will not have to repay 36 million dollars owed to the International Development Association (IDA), the bank’s fund for the poorest countries, the Washington-based institution said in a statement.

“Haiti now has no further amounts payable to the World Bank,” it said.

The IDA debt cancellation was made possible by contributions from 13 member nations: Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Shortly after the massive earthquake in January flattened the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, the 186-nation World Bank announced it had suspended repayment of the IDA debt and would seek to cancel it.

“Relieving Haiti’s remaining debt is part of our effort to pursue every avenue to help Haiti’s reconstruction efforts,” Robert Zoellick, president of the World Bank, said in the statement.

Chile Rushing To Deliver Aid To Earthquake Victims

Rescuers searched for survivors Monday as crews sought to deliver food and water and prevent looting after the fifth strongest earthquake in 100 years ravaged central and southern Chile.

More than 1.5 million people were without power in and around the capital of Santiago, according to Chile’s National Emergency Office, but the hardest-hit areas were farther south, in the Maule and Bio Bio regions along the coast.

Authorities said 541 of the 708 reported deaths happened in Maule, where a sewer system collapsed, water towers were close to toppling and communities lacked basic services, the emergency office said.

Many people were without safe drinking water and electricity or gas service in Bio Bio, where 64 deaths occurred, according to the Chilean government’s latest figures.

Rescuers from Santiago, fresh from a stint in earthquake-ravaged Haiti, worked through the night to free people who could be trapped in a 15-story building in the hard-hit city of Concepcion in central coastal Chile, about 70 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter.

Firefighters said they believed they heard tapping from inside the building. Authorities said 40 or 50 people could be inside but do not know whether they are alive or dead.

The rescue and recovery work unfolded as Chile’s defense minister blamed its navy for not issuing a tsunami warning after the 8.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the South American country Saturday.

Such a forewarning could have allowed villagers on the coast to flee to higher ground.

“The truth even if it hurts [is that] a division of the Navy made a mistake,” Defense Minister Francisco Vidal said.

After the quake initially struck, President Michelle Bachelet said a tsunami was unlikely.

Yet a large wave crashed later into the Chilean islands of Juan Fernandez, killing at least eight people and leaving another eight missing, the emergency office said.

Chilean authorities later realized the earthquake generated large waves that slammed coastal areas. “What we saw between the sixth and the ninth region is a tsunami,” Vidal said.

The Navy has an emergency system under which captains in each port may issue warnings when sea levels begin to rise.

Those captains were the ones who eventually sounded the alarm and helped prevent additional loss of lives. “There was a mistake,” Vidal said. “Fortunately, the system was activated.”

Calling the quake an “unthinkable disaster,” Bachelet said a “state of catastrophe” in the worst-hit regions would continue, allowing for the restoration of order and speedy distribution of aid.

Chile hopes to resume normal commercial air service soon, Bachelet said in remarks on the Chilean government’s Web site. Authorities also are working to prevent the possible spread of disease, she said.

“We’re facing an emergency without parallel in the history of Chile. The passage of time has demonstrated that we’re facing a catastrophe of unforeseen intensity, one that caused damages that are going to require immense, united efforts from all sectors of the country — private and public,” Bachelet said.

The earthquake is tied for the fifth strongest since 1900, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Another 8.8 quake struck off Ecuador in 1906.

UPDATE: Recovery And Rescue Continues In Chile After Major Earthquake

An 8.8 earthquake, 100 times more powerful than Haiti, struck Chile early Saturday morning, causing a massive amount of destruction, fallen buildings and at least 140 deaths. Tsunami warnings were called for the coasts of California and all of Hawaii, but the warnings have since been cancelled.

Since the earthquake hit on Saturday morning, a large wave has already caused the deaths of 3 people and several others still missing on the island of Juan Fernandez, 400 miles off the coast of Chile.

Unlike Haiti, Chile has suffered earthquakes before, and has a disaster plan they began implementing just hours after the quake. An organized effort is underway to find and save survivors and recover the dead. However, aftershocks, at least 40 so far, continue to impair the efforts and may contribute to additional fatalities and devastation. In spite of relief and recovery, the country is still in need of water, food and medical assistance.

As reported by CNN, “The capital lost electricity and basic services, including water and telephones. Bachelet, Chile’s president, said regional hospitals had suffered damage; some were evacuated. A major bridge connecting northern and southern Chile was rendered inoperable, and the Santiago airport was shut down for at least the next 24 hours.”

President Obama issued a statement offering U.S. help in recovery and rescue if needed.

Tsunami Warnings Were Issued But Lifted For Pacific Rim

According to CNN.com, “People in Hawaii were evacuating coastal areas, filling sandbags and stocking up on essential supplies in preparation for the Chile quake-triggered tsunami.”

Sirens sounded early Saturday morning across Hawaii, warning people of a possible tsunami and telling people to in coastal areas to evacuate, hours after a 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile.

Grocery stores are being bombarded with shoppers preparing for hours or possible days away from home in emergency shelters or the houses of friends. After several hours, the Tsunami warning was lifted.

Devastating 8.8 Earthquake Strikes Chile

As the sun set in Chile on Saturday, a picture of the immense structural damage wrought by an early morning earthquake had come clearly into focus, with the nation’s president estimating that 2 million people had been affected in some way.

More than 300 people were killed, according to Chile’s Office of Emergency Management, and 15 are missing.

The carnage from the 8.8-magnitude quake didn’t begin to approach that unleashed by January’s earthquake in Haiti, which left 212,000 people dead and more than a million homeless, even though it was considerably less forceful, with a 7.0 magnitude.

Saturday’s quake was 700 to 800 times stronger, but at a greater depth — 21.7 miles — compared to the shallow 8.1-mile depth of the Haiti quake, which contributed to much of the damage there.

Coastal Chile has a history of deadly earthquakes, with 13 quakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher since 1973, the U.S. Geological Survey said. As a result, experts said that newer buildings are constructed to help withstand the shocks.

Still, the damage from Chile’s earthquake was widespread. A 15-story high rise near the southern city of Concepcion collapsed; the country’s major north-south highway was severed at multiple points; and the capital city’s airport was closed after its terminal sustained major damage.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced that all public events would be canceled for the next 72 hours and that the start of the the school year — originally scheduled for Monday — would be delayed until March 8.

“The forces of nature have hurt our country greatly,” Bachelet said in a nationally televised message Saturday night. “We are now having to face adversity and stand again.”

Supermodel Naomi Campbell’s “Fashion For Relief” show managed to gather a plethora of celebrities to strut their stuff down the catwalk in a bid to raise money for Haiti. Kate Moss’s second stint down the runway in six years was one of the main attractions at Somerset House in London.

In a tribute to the late British designer Alexander McQueen, his friend Moss wore his design, showing she still had “it” as she strutted her stuff in a leather Basque and floaty blue print mini dress.

Atlantan’s Body Found In Haitian Earthquake Wreckage

The body of Diane Caves, a 31-year-old Atlanta woman on temporary assignment to Haiti, has been found, according to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which dispatched her to Port-au-Prince just before a massive earthquake on Jan. 12.

She is the first known Atlanta fatality from the disaster that claimed an estimated 200,000 lives.

According to the CDC, Caves, a management and program analyst, was sent to Haiti on Jan. 6 for a three-week assignment to support

The U.S. State Department and the Health and Human Services Disaster Mortuary Response Team in Haiti notified the CDC and Caves’ family, her husband in Atlanta and her parents in Tennessee, on Monday. An e-mail was distributed to CDC workers Tuesday morning.

Jeff Caves, her husband, and Diane Caves’ parents released a statement: “We are all grateful for the extensive outpouring of prayers, phone calls, e-mails and cards of support and encouragement received over the past four weeks from friends, family, co-workers and the general public. Diane made a difference in the world and will be missed by all who knew her.”

Caves started working with the CDC in April 2007 in the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response.

CDC Director Thomas R. Frieden wrote in an e-mail to employees, “Diane’s reasons for going to Haiti were characteristic of her deep commitment to helping others. Her sharp intellect, optimism and adventurous spirit touched all who met her.”

No arrangements have been announced.

Haitian Earthquake Victims Arrive At Dobbins Air Force Base In Cobb County

Five Haitian earthquake victims, including an 18-month-old with brain injuries, were airlifted Tuesday night to Dobbins Air Force Base and taken to different area hospitals.

A network of hospitals was waiting to accept the injured, said Kevin Bloye, spokesman for the Georgia Hospital Association, which coordinates local disaster preparedness efforts.

“When things like this happen, we’re ready,” Bloye said.

The five victims, plus a military member from Haiti, arrived in at the Cobb County base around 9:45 p.m.

Others from Haiti have arrived at bases in Florida in recent weeks, but this is the first group headed for Georgia, Dobbins spokesman Jim Weslowski told the news agency.

Officials from Atlanta VA Medical Center and Dobbins could not be reached for comment by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Grady Memorial Hospital was prepared to receive some of the patients from Haiti, spokesman Matt Gove said, though he was told they wouldn’t arrive until Wednesday.

The waiting hospitals were told there would be a flight a day for four days, and each would bring between 10 and 15 patients, considerably more than earlier reports.

Given the severity of the injuries, a large number of the Haitian arrivals area expected to end up at Grady, which has Atlanta’s only top-level trauma center, Gove said.
