Strawberry Letter: Is It Worth Getting Married Again?

Dear Steve & Shirley,

I’m a 41-year-old professional African-American man in Atlanta that has been divorced for ten years and I have a ten-year-old son that I love dearly. We were married for four years and had our son in the fifth year, which is the same year that we got divorced. My ex-wife and I are cool and we do a good job of co-parenting. But this is not what this letter is about. Ever since my divorce I have dated a lot of women, some serious, most not. I have dated female business executives, doctors, news anchors etc; great women that any man would be lucky to have, but I continuously feel unfulfilled in these relationships. It is also concerning to me that I don’t get those butterfly feelings of love anymore. I read your book and several others about relationships to try to discover what I’m missing, but I can’t seem to find the answer. Most of my male friends are divorced and the ones that are married say that if they did get divorced then they would not get married again. I’m beginning to think that marriage is not worth it. Here is my question. Why should I get married? Money? I’ve been earning six figures for over a decade. Companionship? I have five quality women that I can call right now! Stability? I have a house and two cars and several savings accounts. Domestic help? I cook better than most women and I keep my house clean. A mom for my son? My son’s mom is a good mom and I’m very involved in his life as well. Long-term partnership? In today’s world, most marriages end in divorce, so that is not guaranteed. I’m trying to see if marriage is worth it. What is the up-side of marrying again? It seems more and more like a financial, emotional and constrictive liability to me versus an asset.

Strawberry Letter: Am I Wrong for Being Upset?

Dear Steve and Shirley,

This weekend I met my girlfriend’s best friend and husband; my girlfriend and I have only been dating for three months so this was my first time meeting this friend. When we walked into the restaurant the friend shook my hand but her husband who was clearly intoxicated embraced my girlfriend in an inappropriate manner and then proceeded to kiss on her, not on the lips but neck and cheek. I thought this was very inappropriate on his part and on my girlfriend’s part for allowing this to take place. Well, this continued after we got seated. I went to the car to get our jackets and when I came back in they had been seated and “he” tells me to sit next to his wife which again didn’t sit well with me, I didn’t want to create a scene or appear to be insecure but I felt this was all inappropriate behavior. I felt he disrespected his wife and her best friend by allowing this to continue to go on and that’s the end of it but it went on the entire evening. I spoke to my girlfriend about this when we got in and I could tell she didn’t like my saying anything about it. Her response to me was she didn’t see anything inappropriate and then I said to her did you ever consider your friend’s feelings? Because she clearly appeared bothered by it. She said to me “well, since I see that it’s a problem for you I will not allow this to happen again.” Not one time did she acknowledge that it was inappropriate. Am I wrong Steve? I truly wanted to kick his behind and drop her because you’re old enough to know that this was wrong. Now she said if I had done the same thing that she would be very upset and not tolerate it. Please advise.

President Barack Obama returned to Atlanta on Sunday to deliver the 2013 commencement speech at Morehouse College. It was a historic event that saw the nation’s first black president addressing the nation’s only college for African-American men.

“Go get that law degree. But if you do, ask yourself if the only option is to defend the rich and powerful, or if you can also find time to defend the powerless,” Obama declared. “Sure, go get your MBA, or start that business, we need black businesses out there. But ask yourself what broader purpose your business might serve, in putting people to work, or transforming a neighborhood.”

Despite rain that was heavy at times, thousands turned out to hear President Obama speak.

“We know that too many young men in our community continue to make bad choices,” he said. “Growing up, I made quite a few myself. Sometimes I wrote off my own failings as just another example of the world trying to keep a black man down. I had a tendency sometimes to make excuses for me not doing the right thing. But one of the things that all of you have learned over the last four years, is there’s no longer any room for excuses.”

Dear Steve and Shirley,

I am absolutely at my breaking point right now. My husband and I have been together for three years and everything was going well until about 4 months ago. We never completely stopped having sex, but there has definitely been an emotional disconnect. I never before felt like I had a reason not to trust him, so I’ve never snooped through any things even though I’ve always known the password for the phone and email. Well, the recent change in him finally got to me and I went through his phone. I discovered that not only has he slept with someone else, but she is his cousin. I was absolutely disgusted! I won’t go into details about the full text, but he called her his Freak. She asked him if he had told anyone about them. He said no and she had better keep her mouth shut. They carried on some more about some of the more explicit things they had done and talked about how it would have only gotten better if we wouldn’t have moved away. Needless to say, I’m hurt, angry, scared, and confused! I tried to act normal, but he reads me like a book, so after hours of him asking baby what’s wrong. I exploded and stormed out of the house screaming about nothing! He still doesn’t know what the issue is, only that I won’t stop crying. I’m just so confused right now. Should I even try to talk to him about what I saw. Or should I just go. I mean we are both 30 years old. So definitely old enough to know better and they both seemed to be amused and turned on by the fact that they are cousins who are sleeping together.

These men are being called persons of interest in the case of fatal shooting in northwest Atlanta. (Atlanta Police Department)

Atlanta police are asking the public for help in identifying two persons of interest in a deadly home invasion last week that resulted in the death of Jerrick Jackson. He is the younger brother of Gospel Tabernacle Cathedral’s Bishop Wiley Jackson.

Jerrick Jackson, 47, was shot several times in the torso last Tuesday as he tried to fight off robbers attempting to force their way into his Atlanta home.

The persons of interest use the nicknames “Tre-Tre” and “Big Poppa” and are 16 to 20 years old, the AJC reports. They both frequent the Four Seasons/Thomasville area south of downtown Atlanta.

The fallout behind Lil Wayne’s controversial lyrics where he referenced the torture and death of Emmett Till continues. After Mountain Dew dropped Weezy as their celebrity spokesperson, Lil Wayne’s collaborator Future has come out in defense of the rapper.

ATL’s own Future gave his opinion about the Lil Wayne lyric, which appears on his song “Karate Chop (Remix),” on Big Boy In The Neighborhood radio show. Read his comments below:

“We did the song with great intentions. I never thought it was going to get so much attention. But I think, overall, with the whole situation, he did bring light, in a positive way, to what happened. Even though they might thought it was negative, he brought positive energy to the situation because a lot of people don’t know, my dad didn’t even know who Emmett was. He’s thinking I’m talking about Emmitt Smith. … He raised awareness to people who didn’t even know who Emmett Till is to young kids who didn’t even know what happened to him. … After Lil Wayne brought light to it, they had to go and do their research.”

Love & Hip Hop Atlanta star Lil Scrappy wants to get off probation, but he must wait until next week to find out if his request will be granted.

Scrappy, 29 (born Darryl Richardson), was ordered Wednesday (May 15) to provide a urine sample to screen for illegal drugs. As we previously reported, prosecutors claim that the ATL rapper switched his urine sample during a routine drug screening.

Scrappy is required to undergo drug testing as a condition of his probation. He is on probation for a 2008 first-offender plea to felony marijuana and gun possession charges. A DeKalb County judge scheduled the probation revocation hearing for May 22 at 8:30 am to allow time for the urine sample can be processed.
