In the wake of the grand jury’s decision to not bring charges against Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, Prosecutor McCulloch decided to release thousands of pages of grand jury testimony to the public, among them, Darren Wilson’s. And let us just tell you, it is odd, inconsistent and all around unbelievable, pun intended.

Wilson claims he shot Brown multiple times because he was in fear for his life (we’re getting tired of hearing that one). Wilson’s testimony and just-released photos that show minor scrapes and bruises on Wilson’s face do not support his claims that Brown provoked then attacked him in his vehicle. What they do support is the majority of witnesses’ version of the events — that Wilson grabbed Brown, trying to pull him into his car…a tussle ensued and Wilson shot Brown who then tried to flee.

According to Wilson’s account of the events, he tried to stop Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson while they were walking in the street and said, “hey guys, why don’t you walk on the sidewalk?” They responded that they were almost close to home (Brown’s friend, in an earlier testimony said the same). Wilson then allegedly asked them, “Okay, but what’s wrong with the sidewalk?” to which he claims Johnson responded, “F*** what you have to say.” Because that seems like a totally rational and appropriate response.

Wilson says that Brown fit the description of a suspect who had strong-armed a convenient store earlier and he wanted to apprehend him.  “My main goal was to keep eyes on him and just to keep him contained until I had people coming there,” he testified. “I knew I had already called for backup and I knew they were already in the area for the stealing that was originally reported. So I thought if I can buy 30 seconds of time, that was my original goal when I tried to get him to come to the car. If I could buy 30 seconds of time, someone else will be here, we can make the arrest, nothing happens, we are all good. And it didn’t happen that way.”

According to Wilson, who reportedly weighed 210 pounds to Brown’s 289 pounds and stood 6’4″ to Brown’s 6’5″ stature, Brown felt like “Hulk Hogan.” “When I grabbed him, the only way I can describe it is I felt like a five-year-old holding Hulk Hogan,” Wilson said. And this is where we turn off the news.

Wilson claims he drove off then reversed to confront the boys again when Brown suddenly attacked him. Which again, makes no sense. Wilson reached for his gun, allegedly issuing the warning, “Stop I’m going to shoot.” Brown allegedly said, “You’re too much of a f*cking p*ssy to shoot me.” So he shot him. Who are all of these young Black boys daring people to shoot them? (Zimmerman claimed Trayvon told him he was going to “die tonight.”)

“I felt that another of those punches in my face could knock me out or worse… I’ve already taken two to the face and I didn’t think I would, the third one could be fatal if he hit me right,” Wilson said. (The photos of Wilson’s bruises suggest he may have been hit but not pummeled).

Brown then attempted to flee and Wilson gave chase until shooting him again. “When he stopped he turned, looked at me, made a grunting noise and had the most intense aggressive face I’ve ever seen on a person,” Wilson explained. “I was yelling at him to stop and get on the ground. He kept running and then he stopped in this area somewhere.” Okay, so Mike Brown is a superhero.

Wilson continued, “His first step is coming towards me, he kind of does like a stutter step to start running. When he does that, his left hand goes in a fist and goes to his side, his right one goes under his shirt in his waistband and he starts running at me.” Or maybe his body was jolting from the shots hitting his chest.

He added, “And I ordered him to stop and get on the ground again. He didn’t […] I fired, a, multiple shots. After I fired the multiple shots I paused for a second, yelled at him to get on the ground again, he was still in the same state.” Because superheros can get shot 12 times and not fall.

Wilson’s story drastically differs from dozens of witnesses who say Brown put his hands up in a surrendering motion. Wilson says Brown charged at him with his hands in his waistband. He says Brown, who was wounded, didn’t lose stride.  “At this point it looked like he was almost bulking up to run through the shots, like it was making him mad that I’m shooting at him,” Wilson said. “He gets about eight to ten feet away, he’s still coming at me in the same way. One of those, however many of them, hit him in the head, and he went down right there […] When he went down his hand was still under his, his right hand was still under his body, looked like it was still in his waistband. I never touched him.”  Well, there were 12 actually, and no he wasn’t trying to pull a gun after shot 8 so just stop.

Wilson described Brown’s demeanor as “aggravated, aggressive and hostile.” “I don’t really know how to describe it,” Wilson said. “Um, he turns, I look at his face. It was just like intense. It was.  I’ve never seen anybody look like that, for lack of a better words, crazy. […] It was very aggravated, um, aggressive, hostile. You could tell he was lookin’ through ya. There was nothing he was seeing.”  Well you know, people tend to look out of it when they’re dying.

Wilson told the jury he didn’t know how many times he had shot Brown and that Brown fell on his face. “I don’t know how many, I know at least once because I saw the last one go into him. And then when it went into him, the demeanor on his face went blank, the aggression was gone, it was gone, I mean, I knew he stopped, the threat was stopped.” I wonder what happens when people throw this guy a surprise party.

What’s jumps out in  Wilson’s testimony is how he legitimately didn’t see Brown as an equal human, but as a “crazy” person who seemed soulless while running through gun shots like Hulk: The Green Giant. It’s insane. As long a people have this perception that Black people, in particular Black men, are angry super-humans, they will react will gunshots every time.

Wilson is free to enjoy his honeymoon (he remarried his ex-wife last month, nothing like killing a kid to rekindle a romance) while Brown’s family broken and the Black community asking, “Didn’t we go through this last year?”
